Why Socially and Environmentally Conscious Jews Need to Vote

in the World Zionist Congress Elections.

By Noam Dolgin, Green Zionist Alliance

Welcome to the Israel of the 21st century, a bustling western country, a world leader in technology and medicine and yet a country that many people have difficulty taking pride in. While mainstream Jewish leadership around the world cries for solidarity with the Jewish State, many progressive Jews are rejecting Israel outright and distancing themselves from the Zionist movement. This is in stark contrast to our love for Zion, the land, the culture and the history which most of us feel deep within our souls.

Fortunately we do have a venue to voice our concerns loudly and to effect real change. A small number of progressive Jews are working to create change in Israel through the elections to the World Zionist Congress. All 5 Million Jews residing in the United States have a vote, yet less than 0.2% do. Through the proportional representation system, it only takes 600 votes to earn a seat at the Congress. In no other election can your voice be heard so loudly, so make it heard now. Visit www.congressofthejewishpeople.org to register and vote online today.

The Congress, founded in 1897 by Theodor Hertzl, continues as the primary voice for Diaspora Jewry in Israel and the major conduit for Diaspora funds. Through a strong representation at the Congress by progressively minded parties, we can help guide Israel forward in the years to come and ensure that millions of dollars are directed towards projects that invest in diversity, peace and the environment. If socially and environmentally conscious Jews do not vote, than the only ones who do are the ones who support the status quo, and that is unacceptable.

The Jewish people’s relationship to the land of Israel goes far beyond the current nation state. Zion is at the center of our stories and our prayers. Like a salmon migrating from the middle of the ocean to the exact riverhead at which it was born, the Jewish people are deeply connected to our ancestral home of Israel. As we witness social and environmental degradation in Israel, we want to help, to work for a brighter tomorrow.

I am proud to be involved in the World Zionist Congress elections because I believe we can make a difference. Every day I hear news of small victories by Israelis working for a better tomorrow. Many of those victories are supported by the hard work of Diaspora groups such as the Green Zionist Alliance from the last Congress through today.

I am running for the Congress with the Green Zionist Alliance (www.greenzionism.org/campaign.html), a slate of passionate individuals dedicated to creating a just and sustainable society at peace with its people, land and neighbors. I hope to have your mandate in our mission of Working Today for Israel Tomorrow.

Whether you vote for our slate or one of the other progressive voices, please VOTE and vote now. Voting costs $7 ($5 for students), a small expense to ensure that a progressive voice is heard.

You have a chance to help shape the future of the Middle East and the Jewish people. Don’t let this chance pass you by. It only happens every four years and registration ends Feb 15th.
