Week 2 - The 4 Rs of Waste Reduction: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, and Rot
• Recycling your old computer at a free drop-off event can keep over 1000 types of toxic materials out of the landfill. Landfills can leach poisons into the groundwater and global warming gasses into the air.
• American spend more money on garbage bags than the combined GDP of 90 of the world’s developing countries. We generate trash at an astonishing rate of about 4.5 pounds per day, which translates to about 700,000 tons per day nationwide.

Where does it all go? Follow the recycling trail beginning from your blue bin. Find out how to contribute less to the landfill and how to stop your junk mail. Learn what those numbers on plastic bottles mean and what effect it all has. Ilana has lots of convenient and creative ideas for the 4Rs- it’s not just about recycling anymore!

Week 3 - Home and Car - Clean and Green
• Today’s healthy home cleaning products are effective alternatives to the toxins lining grocery store shelves. EPA studies indicate that human exposure to air pollutants indoors can be up to 100 times higher than outdoor levels.
• If our cars and light trucks averaged 40 miles per gallon, we would save more oil than we currently import from the Persian Gulf. Each gallon of gasoline burned releases 28 pounds of (CO2) pollution, the heat-trapping gas that causes global warming.

Emily Pimentel of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will provide us with further information on reducing our environmental “footprint”. Learn about green products for home and garden, and how to make our transportation cleaner and greener.
